Our Story

Hörnchen Haus (pronounced /ˈ"HERN-chen") was founded to bring a distinctive piece of German heritage to the United States and to share a cherished family recipe with a broader audience. The idea took root more than a decade ago, inspired by repeated visits to Germany’s Franconia region—renowned for its exceptional breads and pastries found at Bäckereien and Backwaren-Kiosks . These small bakeries and kiosks, often located in bustling areas such as train stations and street corners, offer premium baked goods with remarkable efficiency and accessibility—an experience notably missing in the U.S. After years of perfecting our family recipe and mastering traditional techniques, Hörnchen Haus became a reality. The name “Hörnchen” comes from the German word for “little horn” and refers to a horn-shaped pastry similar to a croissant. Traditionally filled with apples and cinnamon, these pastries are beloved for their distinctive flavor and nostalgic charm. Growing up, these pastries were reserved for special family gatherings and made in small batches due to the labor-intensive process—making them a rare and eagerly awaited treat. Over time, demand began to outpace supply, as family and friends consistently asked when the next batch would be ready. Today, we are proud to bring this treasured tradition to the community. Every pastry is carefully handcrafted using time-honored methods and the finest ingredients. We invite you to visit Hörnchen Haus and experience an authentic taste of German tradition.
